This position primary responsible is the administration and maintenance of the Iridium MySQL & MS SQL Database Environments working in cooperation with the IT Operations, Network Engineering, Gateway Technical Operations to provide highly available and reliable database systems to support Iridium services, systems and employees.


  • Administer, Maintain, Tune and troubleshoot MySQL databases versions 5.5 thru 5.7 as well as NDB cluster 7.3/7.5
  • Administer, Maintain, Tune and troubleshoot SQL Server databases
  • Upgrade/install SQL database software
  • Perform backup/recovery of database environments
  • Service database user requests, evaluate tools and applications
  • Plan and design database architecture to support new application development
  • Monitor databases daily, respond to database alerts, and provide on-call support
  • Experienced in MySQL NDB clustering & replication technologies, writing custom UNIX scripts and SQL scripts to automate tasks
  • MySQL Group Replication/Galera maintenance and monitoring
  • Experienced in SQL Server clustering & replication technologies, writing custom PowerShell scripts and SQL scripts to automate tasks
  • Skilled in performance tuning strategies as well as disaster recovery strategies.
  • Provide metrics and reporting as directed
  • Other duties may be assigned by management

Job Requirements:

  • Be responsible for providing day-to-day support and maintenance for key SQL databases and services of our enterprise application platform
  • Be responsible for investigating potential problems and issues raised by business users; this includes being on-call rotation as needed
  • Monitor database events to proactively optimize system performance
  • Work with the team to automate reactive procedures where possible, and to promote rapid response to known issues
  • Work with other teams to promote changes to production and other environments
  • Plan and design database architectures for new and existing systems
  • Be accountable for maintaining database configurations in compliance with established best practices and established baseline configurations
  • Oversee data fixes for business issues or to address application issues
  • Be accountable for proper backup and disaster recovery procedures
  • Work in conjunction with other IT groups and company departments to understand functionality, scalability, performance, security, and integration requirements from the database perspective
  • Develop and maintain an in depth understanding of the database architecture and the general application functionality used to maintain data integrity
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time by management
  • Suggest improvements and seek additional training to maintain skills necessary to execute 

Experience/Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science/MIS or similar
  • 3+ years’ experience with Oracle MySQL Database Administration
  • 10+ years’ experience in an IT related field
  • Oracle MySQL Database Administration Certifications
  • MySQL Enterprise software and tools
  • Redhat Linux/CENTOS Operating Systems
  • SQL Server Database Administration Certification
  • Windows 2012 Server Operating Systems;
  • Distributed File System
  • Windows Failover / AlwaysOn Clustering
  • Knowledge of  Database Security Best Practices, Performance Tuning, Database Backup/Restore and Disaster Recovery Planning
  • Project Management Skills
  • Telecommunications/Cellular/Wireless Industry Experience Desired
