Description:

Candidate will work on a diverse team to perform multiple duties related to the Communication/RF system on the Iridium Satellite Constellation of 70+ satellites. The position will require the candidate to become the subject matter expert involving the Commination system, which consists of K-band hardware and software, L-band hardware and software, as well all the related components to ensure proper function of the satellite. The candidate will develop plans, operational procedures, and software tools for on-orbit characterization of satellite communications hardware/software performance. This will involve analysis of short and long-term Comm/RF telemetry to isolate hardware/software performance problems and resolve potential anomalies. The candidate will support activities related to launch and mission activation of NEXT satellites.

Specific activities are listed below:

 

Duties:

Communications/RF Subsystem Expert Responsibilities:

  • In-depth understanding of all Comm/RF Hardware and software (hardware (Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), RF Modems, Modulation Codes, Multiplexers, Tuners, Converters, etc.)

  • Monitoring and trending the performance and state-of-health of the Iridium Comm/RF Hardware for NEXT and Block-1 Satellites.

  • Resolution of anomalous satellite operation with respect to the Comm/RF hardware and software

  • Understanding of payload software interfaces with the Comm/RF hardware

  • Creation of procedures and pass plans to operate the Comm/RF hardware to maintain/improve system performance.

  • Develop failure contingency plans, operational responses, and recovery procedures.

  • Detailed investigation of hardware anomalies, including detailed data gathering for diagnosis, recovery, and return to service.

  • Telemetry trending and analysis of hardware including: Modem RF link performance (Satellite to user, Satellite to Satellite, Satellite to Gateway), RF Hardware (L-Band and K-Band), Antenna Performance, Satellite data buses (SpaceWire, 1553, ML16DS16)

System Level Satellite Responsibilities:

  • Support the Launch of NEXT satellites and support of Launch and Early Operations (LEOP). Aggressive launch schedule in place for NEXT satellites until mid-2018

  • Support the operational checkout and mission activation of NEXT satellites in conjunction with replacing older Block-1 satellites. Detailed satellite swap plans will be required for the remaining launch schedule until mid-2018.

  • Support design analysis/trade studies for future communication architectures.

  • Provide Comm/RF input for the Operational Satellite Software Product (Telemetry tables, Command sequences, on-board Databases, new Software Product loads)

Qualifications:

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge of Radio Frequency (RF) communication principles including protocols, physical layer elements (RF modulation schemes, RF hardware) antenna theory/applications, protocols, and RF principles (signal-to-noise, interference concepts, link-margin, etc.)

  • Should be able to perform link analysis and link budget to determine power margins in various off-nominal situations.

  • Ability to read and interpret hardware schematics highly desirable

  • Ability to interpret ICDs and SDDs in order to troubleshoot issues and develop understanding

  • Candidate should have experience with Unix/Linux, Perl, Matlab, and Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).

  • Working knowledge of C, C++, Java, or Python a plus.

  • Self-starter with a curiosity for why things behave the way they do, and identifying and evaluating emergent behaviors in complex systems

  • Desire to continually build knowledge of the Iridium systems and its interfaces, dataflows, and characteristics

  • The position requires strong verbal and written communications skills and ability to work within a team at a fast pace to meet schedules.

Experience/Education Requirements:

  • Requires a 4 year degree in engineering, science or mathematics. An Electrical Engineering degree is highly desired but will consider other engineering or technical disciplines (Aerospace, Physics, Computer Science), depending on the candidate's communications hardware/software experience.
  • Target candidate will have 0-3 years of professional experience.
