Description:

Senior Systems Engineer responsible for participating in the development, implementation, and verification of requirements for the Iridium NEXT System and Iridium services. Responsible for systems engineering planning, scheduling, and execution to include requirements definition, allocation, system design, analyses and trade studies, hardware/software design oversight, system I&T and system verification.

 

Duties:

Primary responsibilities will be to lead systems engineering efforts on assigned projects associated with development of new services and capabilities on the

Iridium NEXT satellite constellation. This will involve both technical and programmatic teamwork with Iridium personnel and Iridium contractors. Duties will include:

  • Technical feasibility analysis and trade studies including RF link budget analysis, protocol evaluation and selection

  • Develop top-level system requirements and allocate to subsystems

  • System integration and test planning

  • Support project management and program documentation

  • Implementation tracking and non-conformance resolution

  • Briefing summary of project results, issues tracking and reporting to management

These duties will be done according to company processes and integrating internal and external efforts into a coherent overall project involving risk, schedule, deliverables and cost objectives.

 

Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to solve technical problems and to prioritize and organize complex workflow involving multiple inter-related parallel efforts.

  • In-depth knowledge of systems engineering methodologies and processes to include requirements definition, requirement allocation, system analyses, system trades, system verification, and anomaly resolution.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish customer and supplier relationships and to understand and resolve technical issues.

  • Position requires a hands-on self-starter, capable of working effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • Excellent oral and written reporting and communication/briefing skills essential.

  • Proficiency with standard office/engineering tools required (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Experience/Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in an engineering discipline required. 

  • Ten to fifteen years of relevant experience in aerospace industry specifically associated with the development and operation of complex communications satellite systems.

  • Desired experience with the following;

    • RF system engineering principles in analysis and derivation of subsystem requirements and subsequent flow down for “satellite to ground” Link Budgets, sensitivity analysis, NF (Noise Figure), C/No (Carrier to Noise), SNR (Signal to Noise), and understanding of RF impairments, etc…

    • MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching), EPC (Evolved Packet Core), GTP (GPRS {General Packet Radio Service} Tunneling Protocol), 3GPP standards for LTE, and Legacy knowledge of SS7 and layer 3 protocols, VCS, IPv4/IPv6, ATM.

    • Interpreting message sequence diagrams described in technical documents and then analyzing data collected from protocol test equipment to determine the root cause of issues.

    • How protocols effect QoS, MOS, processor utilization and routing delays within a communication system architecture.

    • Project engineering / project management in satellite development.
