This position involves working in a diverse engineering and analysis team to perform on-orbit checkout and monitoring of satellite computer hardware and software for the Iridium satellite constellation.  Position also involves creating, maintaining, and tracking satellite operational software products.  After the appropriate training, the individual will be responsible for developing plans, procedures, and software tools for on-orbit characterization of satellite computer hardware/software configuration and performance.  The individual will perform short and long-term satellite telemetry trending and analysis to isolate computer hardware/software performance problems and resolve potential anomalies. The individual will also plan and create contingency recovery procedures and coordinate execution of such procedures. The individual will be responsible for various system level activities such as constellation on-orbit testing and satellite phase lead responsibilities, as well as constellation software upload and evaluation. 

The ideal candidate will have either a Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering with an active interest in space.

Specific activities are listed below:


Vehicle Subsystem Monitoring Responsibilities:

Payload Computer Flash Management

Telemetry trending and analysis

   - Computer State-of-Health telemetry

   - RAM/Flash memory analysis for possible bit error due to space environment

   - Computer Flash read/write cycle

   - Satellite data buses (SpaceWire, 1553, ML16DS16)

Payload Computer failure plans and recovery procedures

Payload software and Firmware trend analysis of fault and error logs

Investigation of anomaly responses

Computer and FPGA on-orbit performance testing

Configuration management of payload software pokes and patches for all the satellites in the constellation

System Level Satellite Responsibilities:

Commanding and Telemetry Subsystem analysis and anomaly mitigation

-   COP-1 protocol, XTCE (XML Telemetry and Command Exchange) standards

-   Command and Telemetry Encryption

Operational Satellite Software Product Creation (Telemetry tables, Command sequences, on-board Databases, new Software Product loads)

Ground System and Simulation Responsibilities

  • Satellite payload simulations for anomaly resolution and procedure development

  • Ground model and memory model configuration management, content and integrity checks

  • Satellite Control ground system encryption/decryption content and integrity checks

    Software management for operational products (Clearcase)




Candidate should have experience with C, C++, Java, or Python and a working knowledge of Unix/Linux. Candidate should also have experience with Matlab and Microsoft office tools. Knowledge of computer hardware and interfaces required.  Familiarity with PowerPC family of processors, Space Wire bus and 1553 bus functionality is desirable.  Familiarity with ClearCase or similar configuration management tools desirable. The position requires strong verbal and written communications skills.

Experience/Education Requirements

An Electrical or Computer Engineering degree is highly desired but will consider other engineering or technical disciplines (Mechanical, Aerospace, Computer Science), depending on the candidate's computer hardware/software experience.
